Beware ‘Free’ Verification on Online Dating Sites
The FBI warns of “free” online verification service schemes in which fraudsters target users of dating websites and applications (apps) to defraud victims into signing up for recurring payments. Unlike romance scams involving investment-confidence schemes, commonly referred to as pig-butchering, where victims are convinced to transfer large amounts of money over time, the so called “free” verification schemes involve recurring and costly monthly subscription fees. The FBISDCAAA Victim Assistance Project is intended to provide discretionary funding and services to help meet the critical needs of victims and assist in reducing the effects of trauma, which may include:
- Clothes for rape victims when investigators must collect their clothes for DNA testing
- Suitcases for victims of human trafficking who have nothing but a trash bag to carry their belongings
- Lodging/accommodations and/or transportation for individuals and families fleeing violent situations
- Dental or medical procedures for victims of torture and abuse
- Meals for a community/congregation victimized by a hate crime

A Beary Special Cause
San Diego Regional Law Enforcement has been a proud supporter and partner of Rady Children’s Hospital for the last three decades and the FBISDCAAA is humbled to support the event as well. Our membership dues help contribute to providing teddy bears to every patient at the hospital.

FBI Director Wray Visited San Diego
FBI Director Christopher Wray visited the FBI San Diego Field Office in November 2018 and met with local law enforcement leadership, InfraGard members, corporate partner representatives, and FBI Citizens Academy Alumni Association board members. After sharing a little about himself and his tenure in public service, Director Wray spoke about the importance of public-private partnerships and how much has changed in our society that led to evolution of and increased importance of partnerships between government and corporate entities. He relayed appreciation for the relationship between the FBI and Citizens Academy sites across the country and applauded the San Diego chapter for graduating two Citizens Academy classes in 2018.
FBI Celebrated 110 Years in 2018
The FBI was established on July 26, 1908, by Attorney General Charles J. Bonaparte with just 34 special agents and was officially named the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 1935. Since then, the FBI has grown to nearly 37,000 employees, including more than 13,500 special agents and more than 22,800 professional staff employees in 56 field offices, more than 400 resident agencies, and 90 legal attaché offices and sub-offices worldwide.
